Md. Cop Shot In Head In Training Exercise

February 13, 2013  |

The Baltimore Police commissioner shut down police training indefinitely after a University of Maryland police officer was shot in the head during an exercise at a closed psychiatric hospital.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts told the Baltimore Sun the shooting was unacceptable and suspended all academy operations pending a safety review.

"We're going to take the time to dig to make this better so we don't have this happen again," Batts said.

Police declined to say why officers were using live ammunition or identify the training supervisor of the exercise, which took place at the Rosewood Center in Owings Mills.

Wow, even mall cops don't accidently shoot people in the head.

DEADMAN @ 2/15/2013 12:18 AM

Don't tell me the training officer got his position because he was related to the chief or the president of the school.

Gunny @ 2/15/2013 5:26 AM

When the dust clears. they will find that the safety protocol was not followed. This is the biggest problem we have when it comes to training. mangement pushes to get too much done in too little time, so we cut corners to Save time and someone gets hurt

John and DEADMAN, I do not mean to offend however you may have jumped ahead on this unless you read a different article than the one I just read. I did not see who was training (what agency or agencies), what the training was for, or who was supervising the training in this article. The only thing I saw was the tragedy that a police officer (not important where he worked at the time) has lost his life in a training exercise).
While you may both be right in your statements I believe that Gunny was right on.

Ima Leprechaun @ 2/16/2013 7:18 PM

I hope this was an accident. My condolences to his family and to his department.
