Hasidic NYPD Cadet Fired Over Beard Length

June 11, 2012  |

A Hasidic Jewish NYPD cadet said he plans to sue the agency, after he was dismissed because he refused to trim his beard.

The NYPD asked Fishel Litzman, 38, to leave the academy on Friday. Litzman's attorney told CNN the dismissal is an example of religious discrimination.

The NYPD makes "reasonable accommodations in this regard," Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne told CNN. A beard must be trimmed to measure no longer than 1 millimeter in length.

Wow, I had to shave my beloved goatee of five years at the Academy but it was one of those things that you know you have to do.

This individual knew the regulations going in so he should not be able to sue. The NYPD should sue back for malicious persecution IMHO. It is a safety factor. Additionally Police by their very nature should maintain a uniform appearance.

Sounds like somebody needs a Jew Lawyer!! In this age of Political Correctness for everyone but Christians, I am confident that this recruit will be back on the job with back pay! Last week D.C. had to allow a Sikh police officer wear his turban while in uniform. The only news here is that someone was so out of step with reality that they created this litigation.

He knew the regulations when he signed up. I have no sympathy for him. I agree with you robocop he had his chance and blew it. He needs to man up, get over it, and move on.

Yeah, they would have to get into a whole new realm of training at their academy: facial hair retention. If I was some thug looking to resist arrest or assault a cop, I'd go for the guy with the ZZ Top thing hanging off his face.

He knew all along from the very start how he was going to sue the NYPD for $$$$$$$. That's what happens when somebody does somebody a favor. Everybody pays for it.

As a retired (2002) Newark Police Lieutenant that is a Sunni Muslim and has been since the mid 90's with a 7 inch beard, I believe the courts will rule in his favor if he his wearing it for religious reasons. I was amongst numerous Officers the City of Newark, N.J. was trying to terminate due to exercising our religions beliefs and Constitutional rights. With the help of the Fraternal Order of Police and Police Officer Shakoor Mustafa, the Appellate Court ruled in our favor and received monetary compensation. Now it is Case Law.

Someday I hope Americans can reclaim this country and deport all non-americans back to their country, and for the rest the country they are trying to be part of. End all non-american holidays and re-name the streets that were changed for obvious reasons.
