January 03, 2012  |

The Hagerstown (Md.) Police Department will begin offering financial incentives to its officers and candidates who arrive with a law enforcement certification when they apply.

The City Council approved an initiative in December to allow the police department to offer $500 to a current officer who refers a successful certified officer. The department will also award $5,000 to the individual officer, reports the Herald-Mail.

The department now has two open positions are for full-time police officers at a starting salary of about $37,793. Those with experience would get a bump in pay for up to five years of experience.
