Compton Leaders Hope To Reestablish Police Department

The Southern California city once notorious for gang violence perpetrated by Bloods, Crips and Sureños may reestablish its police department, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The Compton City Council voted Tuesday to sever ties with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department that has overseen a precipitous drop in the murder rate.
Compton was once considered one of the most violent cities in America primarily due to the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s. There were 55 murders in 1999 compared with 37 in 2009. In 2008, Compton ranked as the 17th most dangerous city in America.
