Of course the parent's are blaming everybody and everything else for thier son's action's that forced this officer to defend himself from an out of control very large kid. That's what's wrong with people today, nobody will take responsibility for thier action's "It's alway's someone else's fault".

I agree with the previous writer...did the mom/family not see this child had issues? Or, did they just choose to ignore the problem(s) and hope the medication would work. Why in today's society do we not own up for our problems? I believe this Officer did what he had to do given the circumstances. What if this kid had killed the Officer then had access to his sidearm(s)? Instead of one person being dead, this child could have gone on a killing spree.

Hopefully the community is behind the Officer and his department, because having been involved in a fatal shooting myself....I know how much that helps ease the situation, even when you are justifed in your actions.

I am also concerned with the drugging of children. Sometimes it may be appropriate, but more often than not, I wonder if the drugs cause more harm than good. I was a problem child up until senior high school. I didn't need drugs. My parents did their job and whipped me into shape (pun not necessarily intended). Not only do people not want to take responsibility for their actions, I'm seeing more and more parents not doing their job...raising their kids. It's a problem found in all classes of society.

The Chief's statement pretty much sums it all up: "It is unfortunate that the officer was put in a position where he had to take a student's life," Dyer told reporters Thursday. "Had he not defended himself there could have been further tragedy." The nation as a whole has to do a better job with mental illness so it limits the (Dammed if you do - dammed if you don't, responses from public!! - People who second guess actions need to remember unless you were there, you really don't know what this officer faced in mere seconds and did what he had to for self and defense of others...Force Science has a two part series on use of Force I highly recommend reading look for transmission #95 for part 1. @ http://www.forcesciencenews.com/home/index.html
