Shotguns Find Favor with New York City Criminals

Federal authorities report that shotguns are now one of the favorite weapons of criminals operating in New York City. It's the first time in seven years that shotguns have been so prevalent in Big Apple crime circles.

Some 394 shotguns were seized from New York thugs last year. That makes the scattergun the fourth most popular type of gun among the city's criminals.

Michael Sullivan, acting director of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, told the New York Daily News that handguns are still the most-favored weapon among New York criminals. Semi-auto pistols are number one, revolvers are second, and rifles, including AK and AK copies, are third.

Authorities say they believe shotguns are popular with area crooks because they are readily available. Shotguns can be purchased legally in surrounding counties without a permit or an extensive background check.

How is this news? The headline says "Shotguns find favor with NYC criminals". The body of the article says they are most popular after semi-auto's, revolvers and rifles. Doesn't that make them the least popular type of gun used in crime? This looks like an anti-gun article disguised as news.

Alright...why is POLICE letting themselves be dragged into the anti-gun fray? Shotguns "gaining favor" by coming in dead last, behind pistols, revolvers, and rifles...give me a break! ATF&E trying to stay in the headlines...40k NYPD officers seized less than 400 shotguns...WOW! Write back when you have some real news ; )

the only part of the article I take exception with is that shotguns can be purchased w/out a permit or extensive back ground check is incorrect anybody buying a firearm from a dealer must have a nics check completed by the dealer prior to purchasing the weapon.
