Police Deaths Down

Deaths of law enforcement officers saw a downward trend in 2002. This may be due to better training, equipment, and medical care following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

There were 147 officers killed in 2002, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. This shows a sharp decline from 2001, when 230 lost their lives, including 72 responding to the attacks.
