Hispanic Gang Tattoos

Tattoos are an excellent tool for law enforcement and corrections officers to use to identify known or suspected gang members. This gallery includes examples of tattoos worn by predominanly Hispanic gangs such as the Mexican Mafia, MS-13, and the Latin Kings. The number "13" is used because M (or La Eme) is the thirteenth letter of the alphabet and is used to signify the Mexican Mafia, which uses Sureños—gangs that swear allegiance to the Mexican Mafia—to carry out its orders from prison.

Sheriff Arpaio Won't Cooperate with Federal Inquiry

Joe Arpaio is done cooperating with the Department of Justice. The Maricopa County sheriff, whose agency became the subject of a federal Civil Rights Division investigation in March, announced at a news conference Tuesday that employees would no longer consent to interviews or allow investigators access to documents until the Department of Justice details the allegations against Arpaio's office and appoints attorneys to communicate with the county's counsel.

Empty jail cells are normally something to celebrate, but Wayne County's top law enforcement officials say the hundreds of vacant jail beds are not because of a drop in crime or more reasonable sentencing. Floors of the downtown Detroit jail are empty because police are arresting fewer people accused of those crimes. Altogether, three county jails that held about 2,500 prisoners a year ago now house 400 fewer inmates.
