Having a street gang behind a conspiracy that caused a credit union to lose $500,000 could be a first in California history. State and federal law enforcement officials made that announcement yesterday morning with the arrests of 40 people in the check-cashing scheme, including some active members of the military. Twenty more people are being sought.

The driver got a ticket for going 80 mph and a second ticket for failing to signal a lane change. The ticket was courtesy of Alabama's latest twist to catch bad drivers - spying them from the cab of an 18-wheeler.

An associate working with Lineham to bring the drug ecstasy to California from Canada told him a shipment of 85,000 pills had been seized. Lineham was calm. After all, the deals were struck using coded e-mails -- on encrypted BlackBerrys from Lineham's own company.
