Shawn Nelson was a U.S. Army veteran and unemployed plumber who stole an M60 Patton tank from a U.S. National Guard Armory in San Diego, Calif., and went on a rampage on May 17, 1995, destroying cars, fire hydrants, and an RV before being shot dead by police.

After a long vehicle pursuit on May 13, 2009, El Monte (Calif.) officers George Fierro and James Singleterry arrest Richard Rodriguez, a member of the El Monte Flores gang. During the arrest, Fierro kicks Rodriguez in the head. The officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Omaha (Neb.) police follow a robbery suspect who fires on officers during the pursuit as well as during a shootout at the end, where one cruiser ends up in a precarious position. Officer Matt Rech, whose patrol car video captured much of the chase, is heard calmly relaying information during the Nov. 29, 2006 pursuit. The agency named Rech as an officer of the year for 2007.

A Texas Chrysler dealer is offering a powerhouse law enforcement version of the re-introduced Dodge Challenger muscle car that can reach 165 mph. The vehicle is available with a variety of custom options and is currently being used by several Texas agencies as a highway car for drug interdiction duty in solid black. This pursuit involves one vehicle with a female driver. The police chased her all morning, and finally stopped her with a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver, and then "boxing" her in. She refuses to get out of the vehicle so officers had to pull/drag her out.

The LAPD chases a murder suspect during a vehicle pursuit that starts with the driver weaving through traffic lanes running off a bridge to head into wrong-way traffic. Eventually, about 30 officers converge on the suspect for the arrest, but only after a physical confrontation. The pursuit was on May 30, 2008 and is documented via SkyFox footage. He was suspected of murdering his girlfriend.  

A patrol car chases a man on a motorcycle, who accellerates away from the officers, triggering a pursuit that eventually leads off the highway down a dirt road. The rider drops the bike, breaks his ankle and is caught.

Making sure police officers can drive well is not enough. They must also keep their mental skills just as sharp to follow policy under stress and exercise good judgment throughout the pursuit.
