Second Career

I served a 27 year career in my home town police dept, the last 8 years as COP. I was reading the local newspaper at breakfast one day, and saw an ad for Director of Security at one of the local hospitals, actually, the one my wife, son, I were born at. I was aware of some problems in the hospital security dept, and made an instant decision that I wanted the job. I had just passed the age to draw maximum benefits from the retirement program. I showed the ad to my wife, and her response was; "You won't be happy"! Bull. I called people in the community that I grew up with that swung a heavy stick, including lifelong friends on the hospital's Board of Directors. I was told that if I wanted the job it was mine although they would go through a seclection process, and the comment; "You won't be happy! Bull! Got the job, and it was a life saving experience for me. I served as Dir of Security for 10 years, retiring again last December. The hospital mandated annual physicals, and found that I had high blood pressure. My closest friends at the hospital were the Emergency Dept. physicians. The got me into a local physician that they trusted, and got my BP taken care of. About a year before I retired, the annual physical revealed that I had prostrate issues. I had a biopsy, and cancer was discovered. My hospital had just implemented the DeVinci Robotics Surgery method to remove the prostrate. I was in the hospital for less than 24 hours after the surgery, and went back to work two weeks later. The path lab exam showed that all the bad stuff was contained in the prostrate, and hadn't spread out of the gland. Still doing well. The 10 years at the hospital was a hoot! What wonderful people to work for. The benefits were unreal after coming out of a municipal police dept. My wife had retired after a 30 year career as a public school teacher, and was bored. I encourged her to appy for a cashier's position. She got the job, and throughly enjoyed it. One of the benefits for working at this hospital, was that if you had to have a hospital stay, they forgave half of the hospital bill. Too many other benies to list.
