New Orleans Post-Katrina

I saw the current poll asking if we would work in New Orleans for 10% more than we make right. It was running 2 to 1 against working there.

I had voted no, but I was wondering why others were also voting that way. Is there a cost where you would work there, or is there some other reason that is stopping you?

For me, I know I would if the money was high enough, but at least at first, the money is not the primary objective. I really do not want to leave Texas is the primary or I would take one of the $125K jobs in Iraq. I have a daughter starting her senior year of high school, and she is ranked number 6 in her class. Texas has a law that she can go to any state school she wants (the state schools must accept anyone in the top 10% of their class), so I won't move from where I am until after next year anyway.

I don't ever intend to move again. If I did, I would be right there in the 6-figure Iraq jobs, too... 10% doesn't even raise my eyebrows...

2 reasons come to mind not to work there. Karen Blanco and Ray Nagin.

Having grown up near N'Awlins and visited there, I didn't want to work there BEFORE Katrina hit! It's a fun place to visit, though. Still would not want to work there. Last time I drove through it reminded me of Mogadishu because of the devastation. Worse, it is a reminder of how fragile "civilization" is, and how in a few days after a catastrophe anarchy could prevail.
