Gun Grabs

Has anyone ever grabbed for your gun? How did you react?

So far, other than in training, no one has made a grab for my gun. I am confident that my reactions will be effective, exactly as I train with them. The big thing to remember is to not give up and keep fighting for control, using any weapon you have (hands, feet, teeth, knife, back up gun, rock, etc.).

I'd gun down that criminal with my OTHER gun. RATATATATATATTATATTTTTT! He and his whole family and everyone around him would be lying in a BIG sloppy mess of blood. In fact I'd kill the whole friggin neighborhood, just to teach em a lesson. And anyone else I didn't like.

Re: Gun Grabs

While fighting a drunk, his 4 friends decided to jump in; 2 of them made a grab for my gun so I clamped my hand down on it and pulled my nightstick. One got behind me, dragged me to my knees and put me in a choke hold, so I slammed my stick upside his head a few times until another one grabbed the stick. Not a particularily good position to be in. A couple of passersbys ran up yelling and the 5 ran off...without my nightstick or firearm. Two of them had to be helped away by their friends, so I didn't feel I'd done to badly. One is probably still singing sorprano <snicker>. Since then I've gotten a LOT more CQB and weapon's retention training, so I think I'd do a little better. Personally? Hope I don't have to find out <LOL>. Still, like Steve said, you have to be in the right mindset.

For you knife carriers, where do you carry your knife? Same side as your gun? Howabout any other auxiliary weapons you would use if someone made a gun grab? I'll tell you this, a nightstick isn't that good of a weapon at very close quarters. But a pocket knife? It may be better then a back up pistol. BUT: Any weapon is useless if you can't access it. Distribute your tools so you always have access to a lethal force option if you need it. And remember, never give up. Never surrender.

Re: Gun Grabs

They best idea I ever heard of for a knife as a backup against gun grabs (and this was specific to that concept) was a two inch punch dagger. The officer wore his pistol on his right hip and his radio on his left hip. He had the radio holster modified so it held the dagger behind the radio with the grip just above the radio. These knives, in case anyone is in doubt about what I mean, are the ones where the grip is a short cross bar above the blade. You grab the knife in your fist with the blade sticking out between the middle two fingers of the fist. The officer (a friend of mine on SAPD) figured he could grab his pistol and push down on it with his strong hand, then grab the knife and drag it along the attackers rib cage or punch it in his side. The pain and surprise should get him to let go of the gun.

I don't think he ever tried it, but it certainly sounded to me like it would work well. And, since I agree with Wolfva, it met the primary requirement of being able to be grabbed by the weak hand so you were never weaponless.
