Basic 1911 Tactics

I am a firearms instructor for my department in Southern California.  It's possible in the near future our Chief will allow all officers at their own expense to purchase and carry a 1911 style pistol on duty.  That being said, some of the veteran officers and SWAT operators already carry this gun and tactics are in dispute.  What I need help on is how do you deploy your 1911?  When the gun comes out of the holster when does the safety come off (obviously immediately when you encounter an immediate deadly threat) but when you do an unk search of a house/building etc?  Always off when out of the holster?  Wait until you find a suspect?  When you go into a room, house/yard then back on safe when clear?  I need some help.  Post here or email directly to prorookie@aol.com.  Info would be very appreciated with email addresses so I can follow up. Thanks

RE: Basic 1911 Tactics

I carried a 1911 on duty. I usually left the safety on until i was in a ready to shoot situation. I also taught this with rifles.

So, while it is an individual agency's prerogative to set their tactics and policy, I would suggest looking at when your agency teaches to take the safety off on the rifle and go with the same philosophy for consistency.

Of course, as long as the finger is off the trigger, it shouldn't matter. And I have always taught to keep the finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
