You Tube Taser Use

Well, if finally happened. A national news story about the use of the Taser on a student at FSU is causing accusations of police brutality. I don't know what the legal reasons for escorting the student from the microphone was, but I trust the Officers on scene were acting legally. The Tasing was completely justified based only on what I saw. I am the first to admit that seeing a video of an incident should never be the only basis for an opinion though. I think it is important to support the officers who were involved. I can't imagine what I would be going through if I saw an incident I was involved in on the TV every 30 minutes. God bless these officers and I wish them the best.

It is also important to remember to fight on behalf of the Taser. It has saved too many lives of suspects and officers to let the CNN mass media take this tool away from us. Encourage your agencies to be advocates for the Taser. Speak out often!

I cannot comment on the student being Tased since I have not yet seen the video and the stories I have don't give enough info to know.

But here is another story you might want to look at:

I have some doubts about the M.E. findings, but it certainly looks bad the way this is written.

To add to this public relations mess a local radio talk show host now has his "Taserpalooza" segment. A tasing story per day! It doesn't seem to matter that the taser use is justified. I was too young to know how OC spray was treated when it first came out, but it couldn't have been this bad. Between Youtube, the internet, and an uneducated media the Taser is going to be pulled from our belts if we aren't careful.

I remember the controversy over OC spray replacing CN and CS, and some of the controversy over them too. It was not as bad as this is, mostly because of the internet capabilities noted above, along with the fact that everyone has a camera now.

The closest thing I can remember to the current media frenzy over the Taser is something most of you younger officers would find ludicrous. Check with some of the older guys in your departments, the ones who seem like they built the department around them. See if they agree that the current frenzy compares well to the switch from .38 special round nose lead bullets to .357 magnum hollowpoints. Every station in the country probably carried stories of the lethality of the cops new weapons, and every shooting was looked at as closely as the current Taser frenzy. Are there any NYPD officers on the board who remember when their department issued magnum revolvers and mandated they carry 38 special ammunition?

This too will pass. It might take another new invention to help police (and I see some of the controversy coming in spike sticks causing wrecks), but it will pass without hampering us too much. Don't worry about the cameras if you do things right, they can only help you.

A lot of people who watched the video are saying that the officer should have just written "Refuse to sign" and handed the ticket over to the driver and that is where the problem would have ended. In all honesty if I don't know you and you have your hands in your pocket after I give you orders, I'm going to have to take a step ahead of you, I have a family to go home to and there is no way I'm going take any chances. When the driver was walking away he had his hand in his pocket and the officer kept ordering him to come back. What is he to think when this guy isn't following orders and heading back to his car? He is already being non-compliant and walking away, the officer had no choice, it was an officer saftey issue IMO.

i use a taser. i believe a x26 (it's being serviced at the moment). i can say, i perfer it over the OC. in short. i was in a very narrow hall way and a guy {who beat his wife bad} wanted to fight me. let me tell you... not just fight, but box. i am first to tell you i can't box, so in fear of being beat, i tased him. after that, he complied and put his hands behind his back to be arrested.
