Batons

I need some input...I m looking for re-tractable baton for duty. Is there a brand to stay away from, what works well? Thanks in advance for the advice.

ASP works pretty well for me. Make sure that whatever brand you go for that it is heavy and not the "light one" if you are going for the light one, you better make sure you have great arm strength to follow through.

Monadnock makes a range of batons both expandable and straight. The expandable come in a number of different lengths and makes. I would stay away from friction lock, because you have to pound it on the ground to close it. Check out their website http://www.batons.com/home.aspx

Batons

Hey thanks guys...

I would prefer a heavy baton...it's like a bo (I have karate experience) except shorter. You need that momentum when you swing for uh... the maximum "owch" effect...lol.

At least I will have a place to start looking.

Those ASP's make great snake poppers! Not too impressed with the performance on motivated suspects, though. Not enough weight. Can't beat a well applied, good old fashioned flashlight if impact must be used, because it's usually already in your hand, and I'd rather gain a little distance and Taser them. Drops 'em like a bad habit and doesn't leave much of a Bo-Bo...

Rach:

If you really want a heavy baton, nothing beats a Streamlight SL-35. You would have to find it used though since they are no longer made. There is also the question of using a flashlight as a baton. Most agencies tend to frown on that for some reason.

On a more serious note, I would strongly recommend you re-examine the desire for a collapsible baton. I am old fashioned and learned to use a baton when I was a young sprout in the Army BUT I still favor a good old fashioned would baton. The LAPD 26" smooth baton with a rubber donut to keep it in the speed ring works well. You do need to remember to get it as you get out of the car since it won't stay on the belt like an ASP does, but the techniques work best with it IMHO.

Baton - reply

LOL! I laughed about the flashlight being used as a baton. It's not a bad idea...really it isn't. What's so funny is my brother-in-law is cop for a big city PD and I guess they had their flashlights taken away for being "too violent" with them. Complaints started coming in so the brass had to do something. Sorry...it's just ironic that someone goes to kill you, but YOU swing a flashlight at them...you're the one being violent (stupid people can just kiss my ass). I refer using the flashlight to the ol fashion game of bonking the mole ..."whack a mole"...except police play with people! I know...twisted humor.

We don't use metal flashlights because of the damage they can cause when being used as a baton. So we just beat the hell out of them with plastic ones until either the violent subject yells mercy or the flashlight breaks. :-)

Steve...as a rookie it was fun in the beginning trying to figure out how to move with a turtle shell (flack jacket) on and a belt full of stuff...(LOL) I think I will stick to a retractable baton just to spare myself from getting in an embarassing situation. At least I've learned how to move quick with all the gear on. After our 4th of July festival, and 9 hours on my feet, I'm pretty confident I can move quick since I had to in responding to drunken fights and moving out of the way for a car (didn't feel like getting run over) that didn't want to follow police orders while I was on traffic control duty. Freaking zoo, but we did well getting the crowd dispersed in our zone with out incidents. Yeah...you learn real quick.

Thanks for the baton shopping advice.

See, there is another use for a flashlight. They tend to get a person's attention when you hit his windshield or car door with a good steel one. After you arrest him and impound the car (90% odds he was DWI anyway), he learns to obey the officer directing traffic next time.

Yes...that sounds real effective Mr. Rothstein!

Well, I do know a more effective way, but it does result in suspensions usually. When we direct traffic at night, a lot of officers use lit flares (and I have in the past - now I use a flashlight with an orange cone on it). Anyway, the one officer was directing traffic when he had to jump out of the way of a car that ignored him. As he jumped, he threw the flare at the car (many of us have done this too). He had the bad luck - or good aim - to have the flare go in the open back window. It set the car on fire. DWI Driver was arrested and booked - and learned to watch for officers. City paid for a new car. Officer got 5 days off without pay.

RE: Batons

Carefully apply the flashlight to soft targets below the plane of the shoulders. I prefer a punch rather than a wild swing. Our old wooden batons were great! Then they came out with the composite model, even better. And since this is confessional...I have had my flashlight slip out of my hand a few times while giving hand signals to dumbass drivers. As with most things in the PO world, articulate well!
