How to verify when agency no longer exists

Please provide alternative method for verifying retirees when the original employing agency no longer exists due to the creation of DHS. Federal retiree records are not generally maintained by agencies, and it is unreliable to try to call and hope that someone who remembers you picks up the phone.

I carry a leather portfolio when I travel, that, among other things, contains copies of pertinent portions of my KSP personnel file that show such things as when I was hired, promoted and retired. It was available upon request from my former agency.

Unfortunately, before LEOSA came along, I didn't see a such need. Earlier, I could have asked for a copy of my COMPLETE file, asking for and receiving quite a bit of neat stuff, such as letters of commendation, etc., which I really would have liked to have kept, but, by then, due to existing retention routines, had already been purged.

Based on my experience, I'd recommend that everyone request a copy of their own file in its entirety when they file notice of retirement. Having copies MIGHT prove valuable in the future, and once it's gone, it's irreplaceable!

You have mail. Federal retiree verification depends on agency policy. Usually the agency relinquishes personnel data once the lump sum annual leave payments have been made and annuity responsibility goes to OPM. Verification by calling the agency is largely dependent on someone being there who knows the retiree. This becomes progressively harder as the retirement period lengthens.

Have them fax a copy of their dept ID to you if they still have it...

Stop your whining, please. If you really are a retired federal LEO, from one of the two legacy DHS agencies (INS or USCS) that actually obtained a LEO retirement, you would have been offered to retire your credentials, and you would have received a final SF50 and a lot of other official documents indicating you retired from INS or USCS. Both of those agencies were abolished in 2003 so we are not talking about a very long period of time since your “retirement”. If you want access to this publication’s restricted LEO section, then cough up some documents to verify who you are and your “retired LEO” status and be done with it. See, at the state/local LEO agencies, when vested or with a medical, it's possible to retire with less than 20 and be an officially retired LEO. With the fed's, it's usally not without that 20. Based on your behavior, it sounds like you may have worked for one of the legacy agencies (probably INS) but did not do at least the requisite 20-plus 6(c) time to obtain an LEO retirement and thus no official LEO retired status or documents. If you did and are just being sensitive about who you give a copy of your retired credentials to, then don’t request permission to access sensitive and restricted LEO forums. Now, with the abolishment of both INS and USCS (primarily INS) a lot of legacy-INS LEOs did end up with unauthorized active INS credentials that never got accounted for and/or surrendered.
