Best Weapon for Reserves

I have applied for Dickson County Sheriff's Department, but you cannot work in the same county that you reserve in. The closest county for me to reserve in is Hickman County, now weapon wise they only require a 40 Caliber weapon. Most of the officers in HCSD have different weapons unlike the city police. They carry the following, what would be the best for me to use as a reserve deputy.

Springfield XD 40

Glock 22, 26

Smith and Wesson M&P 40

Beretta Storm PX4 Series ( I think that this is the one ) and Beretta 96

Sig Sauer

None of the deputies can give me a direct answer on which is the best. Everyone says that thier weapon is better than other deputies. I have a large hand. I cannot make a decision, what can you guys recommend? Thanks.

This is a lot like asking which is the best sports car, a Ford or a Chevy. Each person has their own tastes and looks for different things.

All of those guns are good guns. Each will go bang each time you pull the trigger if you have properly maintained it and loaded it with quality ammunition. I personally recommend a 1911 from any of the decent manufacturers, but I don't think there are too many (I know there are a couple) in .40S&W.

Try each one in your hand at the gun store and see how they feel. Some will fell better for you. Some, like the M&P have an adjustable back strap to make it fit your hand better. Some will seem to point more naturally than others. You can consider all of these things.

And, the last thing to consider is the price and what you can afford. The first time I was given a choice of firearms for a department, the decision went to Glock for this reason and this reason only. They have an outstanding law enforcement officer pricing program where you can buy the pistol from one of their authorized law enforcement dealers (I hope there is one in your area) for less than the normal wholesale price of the same pistol to a non-LE dealer. A model 22 Glock with night sights should go for something in the range of $425 through this program. Sometimes, money can make a difference, all else being equal.

S&W also has special pricing for LEO's and their customer service is second to none. I've carried S&W's for over 16 years as my duty weapons. I'm sure some of the other firearms are fine for duty use but if given a choice I buy American made items whenever possible.

Walther P99 in .40 or M&P in .40. FNP .40 is ok too but pretty darn pricey
