RE: New DHS LEOSA ID Policy

Well, it is certainly not great, but it is not too bad either. They will issue ID cards but they will not qualify the retiree with a weapon. I am a little surprised at the vehemence of the prohibition on qualifying. I am also a little disappointed with the disclaimer that age may make it impossible to identify someone as a retiree. I bet the pension fund can identifywhere he came from.

As far as qualifications, they never would - I don't think any Federal agency will.

At one point, my office allowed our range folks to do the initial NJ qualification before retirement, and they even did one for me after retirement.  Then they stopped that.

AFA LEOSA, if they were smart, they would charge a reasonable amount, give you a classroom session, and then qualify you once each year.  Then they could issue you a fresh card that covered everything.

Rockland county, NY does this for retiree qualifications and it works well.

AFA the age thing, all OPF information is available, you just have to go to other places to get it, they will work with you.  Most of the folks affected by this are already gone, soon will be, or don't care about LEOSA.  The removal of the prohibition on using retired creds as LEOSA ID also helps.

Rockland?

Exfed2002,

Is Rockland county the only place in NY that a retiree could qualify? Have a buddy upstate that retired a year ago and can't find a place anywhere near where he is to qualify. Would be a haul down to Rockland but I guess it might be worth the trip.

As far as I know, they are the only one.

I had heard rumors that Suffolk county Sheriff was doing it but that was never confirmed.
