2007 LEOSA Range Scheduling
This year, the LEOSA range sessions will include the one I attended in the central part of the state, plus one on September 6th in Northern Kentucky, one September 20th in Southeastern Kentucky. one on October 4th in Westeren and extreme Western Kentucky and finally, on October 16th, one in Eastern Kentucky.
I have just confirmed that attendance at the first session this year was up forty percent over the two previous years despite the fact the announcement concerning the dates has apparently not gotten to all retirees.

LEOSA Renewal Update
The KSP Concealed Carry Section mailed out my my notice on Friday, 7-6-07, advising me that my new LEOSA CCDW license was waiting for me in my local Sheriff's Office. I picked it up on Tuesday, 7-10-07, so I'm good to go for another twelve months.
Note: There is some added security now in that they are showing a hologram of the Commonwealth's seal on the face of the card. Agencies should look for that hologram on all Kentucky LEOSA ID cards that indicate an expiration date 6-19-08 or later.

Citation?
Quote: Original post by Captain38
About three years ago, the Kentucky General Assembly passed legislation that formally set into law the state's "standards for training and qualification for active law enforcement officers to carry firearms" and other implementing procedures to allow our retired law enforcement officers to qualify under LEOSA.
On Tuesday, June 19, 2007, I will be attending one of several firing range sessions being conducted by my former agency for retirees so we can be qualified for nationwide concealed carry for yet another year.
I, personally, am very appreciative for that opportunity.
Hey Captain, do you have a link or citation for that statute?

RE: LEOSA
South Dakota's training division does their certification for the PDs starting in May and runs through the summer with their FA instructors traveling to the varied departments across the state. Any retirees are welcome to join up with a department nearest them. I was able to certify the end of May before we left on vacation. This worked out as I certified with my agency in October of 06 (I retired Jan of 07) That certification would have covered me until this October but I would have then been out of luck as far as LEOSA as I'd have to wait until May of 08 to certify with the state...ANYWAY...long story short...the recertification included some class time on safety, threat assessment etc. Mostly geared towards active duty officers. Range time consisted of a dry run through the course of fire and then the actual firing...and due to that pesky part of the law regarding "type of firearm, I had to run through it with both a semi auto and wheel gun...and thankfully, the lead instructor was patient with the reloading of the wheel gun...very simple process, cost was $50.00 and they ended up providing each person extra boxes of ammo at the end of it all...about a week or so after that, I received the certification letter in the mail..which I reduced, laminated and placed in my credential case.

RE: LEOSA
Believe it or not a lot of Federal Officers have problems getting a retired Identification card from their agencies and getting these agencies to fund the cost of qualifying. Department of Defense shuns its officers and gives them a fragile piece of paper that says they are retired, but doesn't mention law enforcement officers.
Fortunately for me I served with a municipal agency that is more than fair and goes out of its way to give its officers the benefit of qualifying and paying the cost of the ammo. The City of Newport News, Virginia is progressive and a great place to live.

RE: LEOSA
What a difference, I've posted before just a few of the problems I had with my former department(chief). Refusal to even respond to my correspondence, Federal lawsuit against the town which ended in a settlement. Charging retirees $500.00 fee for a one time a year to qualify just to name a few. In January, 08 the new Mayor appointed a new Police Chief who came from another department. A very stand up guy who I knew a little from taking calls together when we both worked the road. He called me on April 15, 08 and we had a very good talk, that he had had several people talk to him about the BS that I had to deal with. He said what a great way to treat and say thank you to the department retirees. He didn't know if he would be able to get me the $500.00 fee back but that I nor any other retiree would every have to pay another penny to qualify, he's already working on getting the city ordinance changed. I was welcome at any time to come out and shoot with the department when they are at the range, I qualified on April 21, 08. On April 22, 08 we had a two hour talk about all the problems that I had in trying to get the former chief to comply with LEOSA. What a difference. Last edited @ 4/25/2008 1:17 AM
