The predetermined unequivocal firm belief that YOU will win, prevail, succeed, etc. together with the ingrained, practiced skill to do so. NEVER surrender your mindset, bearing, or weapon. It has been said in many ways throughout history by warriors such as Sun Tzu, Herocletus, and many others... in a nutshell, whoever gets there first with the most, and is able to maintain clear thinking, WINS. Know what you can do, do it decisively, and quickly. Train, train, train, oh yeah...did I mention you should train. Know your policies, laws. When you're right, you'll not second guess yourself on legalities, although it will replay through your mind countless times. At least you'll be alive to think about what could have been done better. Whether you were right should NOT be part of that equation.
Polish your community service skills, but don't forget to cultivate your warrior spirit and keep it finely honed. Stay alert!

You need to have several things to live through a truly violent confrontation, which can come in several forms, physical attack, weapons, and firearms.

First you must be in good physical shape. This may not only give you an edge over your attacker, but if injured, you chances of survival are far better when you body is in good physical shape.

Second you must be proficient in your use of physical defense and offensive techniques. You have to know what to do and how to do it so that you are not hurt any more than is needed.

Third be proficient in the use of your tools. Plumbers are good with a wrench, you should be good with your firearm, you ASP or Baton, your TASER or whatever other tools you have. You need to know how to use them.

And last you have to have the mental mindset to confront the attack, win the confrontation, and then come out of it with the least amount of injury or damage as you can both physically and mentally.

I highly suggest that every officer or prospective offers listen to Lt. Col. Dave Grossmans, Bulletproof Mind series lecture. Also his books "on killing" and "on Combat" should be read.

My personal mantra to my recruits is "You do not stop fighting until your dead!"
