RE: How Do You Stay Fit on the Job?
I do PT every day. Free weights Mon, Wed, and Fri, cardio every day, Sundays off. PT until you puke, drink some water, and PT some more. It will make you sleep better at night. Never let your mind tell your body it's time to quit, or you will quit when you get uncomfortable. You'll be surprised at how much you can do. Stay active, don't smoke, eat healthy. I'm 46, been a cop since 1983. Stay fit! Your life depends on it.

Yarbrough,
How did you overcome the mind control? I'm curious the steps you took.

RE: How Do You Stay Fit on the Job?
Aqua Pig... man, sometimes it's really hard. But once you have been pushed/pushed yourself beyond limits previously imposed, it becomes much easier. Then, you KNOW you can do it, so it becomes a choice of whether you are willing to do it.
When I'm really done, tired...trying to get that last repitition w/ weights and everything is trembling and burning, I just imagine that I'm lifting something that is crushing a child... Trying to finish a run just think of chasing a terrible puke...and then having enough in reserve to twist him up...

RE: How Do You Stay Fit on the Job?
My fitness routine is not quite as extensive as yarbrough's. I lift weights every other day and on days in between I run, bike or some other cardio. I sometimes take one day a week off, but not usually. I love lifting weights, but the cardio is sometimes hard for me to get excited about. I try to do something different with the cardio so I dont get bored even if it's as simple as running a different route. I think one of the most important things to do is eat right. I bring my lunch right with me with different things to munch on during my shift such as carrots, fruit, yogurt, almonds, etc. rather than eating one meal. It's difficult to stop anywhere and eat healthy on lunch. Plus I save money bringing my own lunch and I dont have to wonder if someone spit in my food! Like yarbrough said, don't smoke and stay active, don't spend your off days laying on the couch all day.

4 day minimum
I am blessed by having an excellent gym in our substation. I do a minimum of 1 hour before shift. On my days off I take advantage of living in Colorado and Backpack/Hike/Ski/Snowshoe. Somethings a fun as running the Arkansas river can be a great workout. I believe if all I did was climb a 14er on the weekend I would probably stay in better shape than many of the bad guys.

Question
Jeep, which department do you work at in Colorado? I am going to start the Academy for Longmont Police Department in January.
