October 2008

Officer Holly Mong of the Jersey Village (Texas) PD was able to thwart an attempt to carjack her. What do you do to make sure you're not ambushed? Or to handle the situation if you were?

I try to keep a high level of situational awareness at all times. Not just visual, but audible and odor clues as well.

This case is being discussed quite a bit now on some of the other boards I frequent, especially civilian self-defense boards. Off. Mong did a great job defending herself once she realized what was happening.

The point being made by many people is that this is only an officer related shooting by the sheer coincidence of her being an officer. She was an off duty individual citizen when she was attacked. She may have used some of her police training to think it through and react, but she was basically just an armed citizen.

This can happen to any of us, and to our families. Off. Mong was not apparently targeted because of her status. The argument being made is for all legally allowed citizens to carry all the time until we can predict when we will truly need it.

The second point to be learned is to never leave the scene of the first crime. The robbery scene was the first crime. When victims are removed from the first crime scene, we almost always find the dead body later on and have a second crime scene. Sometimes there are other crimes, such as rape involved, but it will almost always end up in a murder.
