Virginia Deputy Hit by Friendly Fire

A sheriff's deputy shot another deputy in the leg Monday morning as the two checked a house that was about to be boarded up, police said.Police said the shooting appeared accidental, but said the incident was still being investigated. Sheriff Bill Watson said Monday afternoon that the deputy was doing fine. He was still being treated at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, he said.
Shortly after 10 a.m., the deputies worked to clear a house in the 2200 block of King St. while inmates in a work crew waited outside, said Portsmouth Police Detective Jan Westerbeck.One deputy's gun fired. The round struck the second deputy, going through one leg and also injuring the other, Westerbeck said.Sheriff Watson said the deputy was being treated and was doing fine.No charges were filed, Westerbeck said. Investigators are still speaking to witnesses, Westerbeck said. Authorities did not identify the deputies.The house was owned by an investor and the president of CM Development.[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
