RE: Scholarship Info?
You may be eligible for "retraining dollars" through your state's workman's comp funds. Before you allow them to retire you, find out what your rights are under WC laws. Also, contact your police union. They may be able to assist you in some manner.
I know in California if you work for some agencies, there are WC attorney's who will assist you with your WC case, you may want to retain one. The amount you were once able to get for retraining in California, was 16,000. But, the Governator modified some of the rules and the amount is now 10,000, minus a percentage taken by your lawyer for processing the settlement through the courts. Out here you can use the money on whatever education you want that will help you get back on your feet.
The attorney will also help you get a fair medical disability retirement check based on years of service and degree of your inability to do your job. Also, get other opinions from doctors on your injuries and the degree of disability you sustained on the job, never accept one opinion as being fact.
Have you filed a WC claim yet? If not, you want to 911. If you research this scholarships for injured officers, you won't find much. Usually, scholarships are geared towards surviving children of an officer. You may also want to apply to the schools you are or want to attend for your post-baccalaureate degree, they will have scholarships available too. Check out grants too, these don't have to be paid back either.
I have a retired deputy friend who went through this mess, and it can be a mess if you don't know what you are up against. He had to retire from the department because of repetitve stress injuries he sustained. He had to have multiple surgeries to his elbows, and needless to say, you can't wrestle with inmates can you?
A very sad commentary on law enforcement agencies in this day and age, these use you up, and kick you to the curb with little or no resources available to you. You are nothing more than a badge number and a warm body filling a slot. More should be done to protect officers who are forced out of the job because of on duty injuries. Hope this helps! RE: Scholarship Info?
Dave e, forgot to add, you will be eligible to sign up for unemployment and possibly SSI. Here is some info on WC;
Workmans Comp Law Workmans comp law is designed to ensure that employees who are injured or disabled on the job (work place accident) are provided with fixed monetary awards, eliminating the need for litigation. These workers' compensation state laws also provide benefits for dependents of those workers who died because of work place accidents or illnesses. All states implemented some form of workers’ compensation laws by 1949, and fast forward to March 2008, 153.8 American workers are under the benefits of workers’ compensation. In some cases, proper benefits after an injury on or from the job are not received.

Workers compensation laws establish a comprehensive framework in which most employers follow. The Federal statutes outline is limited for federal employees and workers that are employed within a governmental position.
Other similar programs include:
The Federal Employment Liability Act (FELA),
The Merchant Marine Act (the Jones Act)
The Long shore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act (LHWCA)
The Black Lung Benefits Act
The Federal Employment Compensation Act provides workman’s compensation for federal employees and non-military civilians. The benefits of Workers Compensation are limited to when disability or death has been sustained during the performance of an employee's duty and yet is not caused by a willful act on part of the employee.
If you feel that you are entitled to workers’ compensation due to an injury sustained at work, you should seek legal counsel from an experienced attorney. Erroneous decisions could compromise the compensation you deserve.

RE: Scholarship Info?
Dave.....another after thought....after seeing what my friend went through, losing a job he loved, you may want to prepare yourself for the "grieving process." Losing a job like this is devastating for people and more so if the job was your source of your identity and self esteem. When you start feeling bummed out, it is time to get some counseling. It took him a long time to get his head right and start thinking about his future.

RE: Scholarship Info?
Dave,
I suggest you check with your local 100 Club, if you have one. The ones around here (Texas) have regular scholarship programs for active peace officers. i am sure they would consider helping someone in a case like yours too.
