RE: Beaufort, SC PD

I love being a cop and always go back to it when i take a break (work in the computer field or whatever). There is also a well known phenomena at seven years, called either the 7-year itch or burnout. It is the most common time in an officer's career to want to make a change. It is especially true when a department has changed its focus and the way it works from what got the officer on in the first place.

If patrol work is where you love (and I do), go back to being a patrolman for awhile. If it is just the longing for patrol, you might check into staying with your current agency (federal retirement can be hard to beat) and taking a reserve or part time slot with a local department. That way you can be a cop and know you are a patrolman helping people while still working with the agency that you once loved and got you into the field. It will help you make up your mind one way or the other about what you want to do.

And again some more wise and good advice.... Thanks Steve. Yeah I really want to get back into doing the patrol work again and being out there feeling like a cop again. I think you guys are right about the burnout thing and that I just need a change. the Fed retirment is nice but, I just can't see myself staying there for the next 23 years. I will go nuts. Plus the upside is that since I have been on for over 5 years I'm vested now so if I do leave I still get a small pension from the govt. But, I think for my own happiness and health I need to get out and go somewhere else. It's time to scratch that itch as you say and move on. Thanks again Steve you guys have both been a big help. Take care .
