I agree. Dealing with University students, while being filmed, is a miserable, thankless job. I'll bet the people in charge of that department are not even cops, but educators. Let them deal with an out-of-control student, and see how much fun it is.

I take the use of force very seriously. Every circumstance is different. The taser was designed to be used in this circumstance. We carry pepper spray and batons, would they have been a better option? No, way. There were too many people to be put at risk to utilize a pepper agent, and the baton could have injured the officers and others.

My heart goes out to the officers involved in the situation. I saw the video and thought the officers performed their duties professionally and acted with great restraint. Everytime officers are sacrificed it empowers jerks like the one in the taser video.
Hopefully, the officers' union will back them up. It would appear that, barring any violation of department policy, the officers would be cleared of excessive force at any hearing (assuming it's not a total sham).

The interesting thing about this dweeb is he apparently set the whole thing up. Not necessarily the getting tased part, but he definately wanted the attention and to get it all on film. The sad thing is these cops did a good, professional job with him. Use of force was by the book, but political correctness and the court of public appeals is going to do them in. I just finished posting on a gaming forum about this very incident; so many people out there with no clue whatsoever of the realities of law enforcement.

I totaly agree with their use of force. Alot of depts have set a taser as less force than pepper spray. I know mine and many other local depts have set it up this way.

The use of the Taser probably prevented further injury. Bless these officers and their families. I hope they are not only found justified, but if necessary a new job with an agency that appreciates the efforts they made to not injure this "student." If their department is willing to hang these officers out to dry, shame on the department. From what I saw, I would have these officers on my left and right any day. Great restraint was shown, but heaven forbid the media tell the truth. Sell papers, sell ad time on TV. Hang brave men and women out to dry.

The Taser is a wonderful tool. Thank God we have it. At almost 50 years old, this tool gives me the "tactical edge" that I still need in the job. I feel that if you can avoid the baton (which is a PR disaster these days) then the Taser is awesome. I have seen it NOT work on drunk and/or enraged persons, however.

I saw video numerous times. as I understand Taser is so hands on , chance of injury, is reduced. I suppose the Officers using hard hands or Baton would of looked better on T.V. No matter what they did unless just talking him out they would of been in trouble. This is the Liberal thinking of our colleges at work.

In some forums I'm actually seeing people say all the cops had to do was ask him to leave. <blink> Well, they DID. Then these 'use of force experts' go on about how it doesn't take 5 cops to subdue one scrawny guy. Course it doesn't...if you don't mind hurting the SOB. But if you want to take him into custody with a minimum of injury? The more the merrier. And of course, all the sobbing about the TASER. As if he was being hooked up to 'Ole Glory' at San Quentin or something. They honestly have no clue just what an ESD does, and how it's much more humane then beating someone into submission. Having done both, I'd rather get tased the baton'd any day.

The next time maybe the idiot will get a few ribs broken, and maybe an arm. I heard some little dufus on talk radio saying that the officers needed training in how too get people to comply without putting their hands on people. To the hos's credit, he told this little whining bleeding heart the facts of the case...."the officers were called on to make him leave after the organizers had asked him and told him repeatedly to leave. They tried to get him to leave using verbal commands, verbal commands failed, when that happens, they HAVE to put their hands on people!" The host then did a good job of educating this little whiner and the listening audience that when you're told by law enforcement officers to do a thing, no matter how ridiculous, or wrong you think they may be, the only acceptable thing to do is comply. You'll get your day in court. That's when you get to have your say and hear the justification. I thought the host did a pretty good job and seemed to grasp the situation well.
