New NJ Legislation Referencing LEOSA For Retirees

Yesterday, the NJ Senate passed A2158 31-2 as a substitute for S206. The bill had passed the Assembly on 6-11-07 78-0-2. This bill modifies the NJ retiree carry statutes to: 1) Extend the maximum age for issuance of the retiree carry ID card through age 75, 2) Reduce the amount of service time necessary to be eligible for the card, 3) Remove the previous six month window after retirement during which an application had to be filed, and, 4) Extends the eligibility for the card to qualified retired LEOs as defined by LEOSA who reside in NJ. What this means is that out-of-state retirees who live in NJ will be able to get the retired ID card, which allows carry in the manner authorized for active police officers (no restrictions). Previously you had to have served in a NJ agency, multi-state agency, or a Federal agency to get the card. The law is now awaiting the Governor's signature, and looks like it will be effective 3-1-08. http://www.box.net/shared/t1pa6booo0 http://www.box.net/shared/lbxwsvts0s

That's good news. I wish Michigan would get on the ball with LEOSA qualifications.
