weapon retention
I can remember at least 3 times that a suspect hands ended up near my weapon during a struggle. I do not believe they were deliberate grabs, however I reacted as if they were. I have taken PPCT courses on my own time and practiced. I t was natural to react no thinking of what to do. If ypu do'nt prepare, you will lose. Last edited @ 11/26/2007 2:45 PM

RE: November 2007 Winning Edge—Dynamic Weapon Retention
Yes, this was good info, but it takes practice, practice, practice, and as we all know, alot of officers dont have the time or just dont feel its nessary to practice these skills, and thats a shame, we as Officers should try to learn and practice all forms of defence as well as offence skills, not only may they save your life, but the life of a brother or sister LEO"

RE: November 2007 Winning Edge—Dynamic Weapon Retention
It does take practice, and most officers don't practice these techniques nearly enough. I have to admit that I don't go to enough training or practice on my own either.
I always make sure I have a good retention holster, and practice simple techniques. Push the weapon back down into the holster and twist to get away from the suspect. And, as soon as I can get enough control or distance, draw and shoot.
One of the things many people forget is that a weapon grad is an attempt on your life. He is not taking the weapon just to add to his collection.

RE: November 2007 Winning Edge—Dynamic Weapon Retention
I did not get to read the article, but the Title brings a few things to mind... 1. There is a gun at every call you make (You brought one) 2. Dynamic is translated as: Have the mental preparedness and mindset to inflict intense and immediate injury/pain on the person attempting to murder you with your own weapon. 3. If somebody kills you with your own gun, it should be because you ran out of ammo and they beat you to death with it...which is unacceptable.
Train realistically. A true take away attempt will be aggressive, and will probably go to the ground. Keep downward pressure on your gun, keep it in the holster, and elbow, gouge eyes, bite, pull an ear off...whatever it takes to get some distance. If you draw, be prepared to shoot, or retain your handgun from a less defensible position. It should piss you off that somebody is trying to kill you...use that controlled aggression to prevail!! Go home.
