RE: November 2007 Mobile Computers
My agency has just started a pilot program for laptop computers connected in the cars. We currently have a total of 6 cars out of 275 throughout the state of Texas that are equipped with computers. We are testing two different types of Panasonic Toughbooks.
At the original demo of the computers, I was favorably impressed with the Panasonics. When the salesman is willing to pick it up and throw it against the ground (not drop, but throw), it says a lot for the durability. And since he did it repeatedly throughout the day as officers would come talk to him, it was even more meaningful.
After I got used to the MDT in San Antonio, it was hard going back to no computer in the car when I changed agencies. I am looking forward to the project going to every car.

Michigan MDC's

Do you have a computer in your patrol car? What type? Do you like it?
Yes, we have mobile data computers. They're lap tops with IM features, LEIN, SOS, & CLEMIS access. Reserves can't use them, but we can use the NETRMS system for our report writing. That's usually done in the station though. From what I've seen of the MDC's, they're useful and sturdy. I think it's a motorola brand (don't quote me). I get too busy once I get in a patrol care to notice that sort of thing :-)
