November 2007 Arsenal—Bushmaster Gas Piston Rifle

Do you use an AR-15 platform rifle as a patrol rifle? If so, do you have any problems with fouling caused by the weapon's gas system?

RE: November 2007 Arsenal—Bushmaster Gas Piston Rifle

Our agency is starting to issue Bushmaster rifles now. My experience with AR rifles has all been personal or military (M16A1), so that may color my attitudes a little. I have never had a problem with it, but in the Army I had NCO's making sure the rifle was properly cleaned and for personal use I like to keep my weapons clean. I did not use or abuse my personal rifle the way a patrol car rifle would be, and my life never depended on it.

I am not expecting a problem in my agency, since most officers will need to buy their own rifle. Officers that make that investment will generally take proper care of it, I think.

I use, teach, and recommend the use of the AR platform for patrol rifles. Operation and cleaning is relatively easy. I've not seen or experienced any inherent problem with the rifle. Keep them clean, use the proper ammo (5.56 IS NOT for .223 civilian chambered AR's). Any weapon is subject to malfunction, so practice immediate action drills. Tap, rack, ready usually fixes it. I don't harp on the forward assist technique, which is a waste of time in a gunfight, and takes your shooting hand off the weapon. Note to the gun enthusiasts who like to "build their own"...the tighter the tolerances the more prone the rifle will be to malfunction. That's why the AK Soviet rifles are so reliable, have you ever noticed how "sloppy" the actions are? Pick one up and get used to it. That is what your adversary is likely to have.
