There was one helpful training tip that was not mentioned. Read the news. Mistkaes cops make are always in the news, as are major court cases. When you see a police incident in the news, you can analyze it. When the Supreme Court makes a ruling, you can read about it. CNN.com used to be a good source for keeping up with SCOTUS rulings, but it has gotten harder lately.

Use the court web sites. The courts usually try to release their rulings on the computer all on one day of the week. They may not all apply to police work, but checking each time will help you stay up to date.

Check the US Supreme Court (SCOTUS), the US Circuit Court of Appeals for your area (Mine is the Fifth Circuit), and you state Supreme Court and are court of appeals (for Texas, I need to keep an eye on the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals, plus the area Circuit Court of Appeals). Reading the actual ruling is the best way to understand what it says and how it affects our jobs.
