May 2007 Spotting Stolen Cars
What is your agency doing to help recover stolen cars? Are you participating in this effort?

RE: May 2007 Spotting Stolen Cars
I used to like to cruise the malls for cars left late at night or on Sunday mornings. I could usually run every car there to check them for stolen. I also would check the apartment complexes during the day during the week, when they had a lot fewer cars in them. Both of these techniques helped me recover a lot of stolen cars compared to some of the other officers.
One of the tips the article missed was to look at the license plates carefully. Remember that the back license plate will not usually get bugs on it, so if you see one that is covered with bugs, there is a good chance that it is a stolen plate from the front of a car. Another trick is to look for the rings left from the screws when the plate was removed. If someone removed the plat and put it on a different car, there is a good chance the rubbed off area from the old screws will still show up.
