June 2007 Winning at Night

Most officer-involved shootings happen at night. Have you trained to fight in the dark?

Continually. Get around some strobes and check out your sights. Learn to manipulate your flashlight. Learn how to tuck it under a knee to reload. Learn not to light yourself from cover (light in front). Learn to distinguish a threat by providing enough light to the threat and the area beyond. Light, shoot, and move. There are a lot of training issues here, and in my opinion if you don't train to fight at night you're putting yourself in a position of disadvantage. Discover realistic expectations and problems in a training environment. Train safely.

I attended the Surefire low-light instructor course when it was taught by the crew from Strategos. I've also attended a one-day Streamlight Academy presentation. Proper use of lights is extremely important to LEO's. Unfortunately, range limitation prevent as effective training as might be conducted.

Recently, we authorized TLR-1's for our pistols. While we qualified our officers with the lightmounts, we won't be able to use them during our next force-on-force. We have numerous 9mm Simunition barrels, but none for our .40 rail guns. I hope to ramp up the low-light live fire to make up for this deficiency.
