Handling the mentally ill

I have already interacted with a few different mentally ill subjects in my jurisdiction. I appreciated the article giving insight on how to handle them. I have been observing my FTO's as well. Between the two sources, it gives a rookie a good understanding on how to approach a situation dealing with the mentally ill.
I think one of the hardest things in dealing with mentally ill subjects is getting straight was is actually going on. Some do have a legitimate problem, and you don't want to blow off the subject as over-exaggerating or always having a conspiracy. Some mentally ill people may have had contact with the not-so-righteous people of society leaving them with a situation they aren't sure how to deal with, and they aren't sure who to contact for help. Thus, they call the police when they feel threatened. Criminals prey on those people who are mentally ill, in a poor economic situation, or people in an unstable situation. Mentally ill people are not exempt from becoming victims, and are more likely to experience being a victim because of their weakness.
Then there are those mentally ill subjects that are just all in a world of their own. Yal'll know whom I'm talking about...lol.
