June 2007 Joe Arpaio Interview
Did this interview give you insight into the Sheriff? Do you think he's a great lawman or do you agree with his critics that he is a publicity hound and a dangerous dinosaur who tramples on the rights of Maricopa County Jail inmates?

Arpaio interview
I would have been interested in how things are going with Maricopa County SWAT. Arpaio abolished the fulltime unit in 2005, supposedly as a planned "reorganization". I'm more inclined to think it was retaliation against commanders and deputies. Granted, sheriffs can pretty much do what they like, but it seems risky to replace the SWAT team with a new part-time unit in a metropolitan county like Maricopa.

Where do I start? The article did give some good insight as to why the Sheriff of Maricopa County is the way that he is. First, he believes in making criminals miserable to keep them from wanting free bed and breakfast. Hey, I'm for that. He believes in tough love in making punishment just that...true punishment. I'm for that too. He understands that like children...if you let criminals get away with a mild incarceration experience that is taken like a joke, they will not be afraid of punishment and the majority will continue on in their negative ways. The Sheriff is certainly a hard ass, but I wouldn't call him a dangerous dinosaur who is trampling human rights. I would call him a modern Wyatt Earp of the West. Sheriff Arpaio is doing what nobody else really wants to for whatever their reasons are. He isn't afraid to be a hard ass for the common good of the whole community.
America has become a bit too soft on discipline both in the home and in the justice system. We've let lawsuits and politics govern our country instead good judgement, wisdom, and common sense.
