June 2007 Can We Stop the Next Cho Seung-Hui

What steps would you take to prevent the next school shooter? Have you been trained in active shooter protocol?

Well put article, this is something we have been trying to get our schools to understand for the past few years. The importance of a Crisis and threat Assessment team.

I doubt anyone will be able to predict the next active shooter incident with specific information that would allow it to be prevented. I think we should train diligently for the next isolated nutcase that would murder our flock. Get in there quickly with a rifle, a partner, and some grab-n-go goodies, isolate and eliminate the threat.
What we really should be training for is a well planned terrorist attack on our children similar to what happened in Beslan, Russia. If you train for that resolution (What a challenge!) an isolated nutjob will be an easy take. Get over the "negotiation" mindset, you will not be able to resolve this type incident except through a coordinated and aggressive response.

As long as there are evil, twisted individuals in the world there's not any way to stop this type of thing from happening. We can mitigate the damage that they can inflict though. As most college professors are liberal and wouldn't know which end of the barrel the round came out of, arming, or authorizing professors to carry concealed firearms wouldn't work if the legislature passed a law allowing it. I firmly believe that CCW holders should be authorized to carry on campus.

In K-12 schools, yarbrough has nailed it on the head.

Yep, Yarbrough nailed it on the head. But try explaining that to the Campus administrators. They'll be aghast and probably try to get you involuntarily commited for being a dangerous sociopath or something. I read the Va Tech report; know what one of the recommendations is? Ban guns from Campus. Ok, lessee...guns were ALREADY banned at Va Tech by their own rules but that didn't stop Cho. Nor did laws against discharging a firearm in city limits, brandishing a firearm, or MURDERING PEOPLE. But they actually think that a law will stop people like him? Bleah. How do you deal with such mind numbing stupidity?

Or, take Virgina Wesleyan College. Last year a Campus Security Officer was found beaten to death; one of the detectives said it was the most gruesome murder scene he'd ever seen. So, does VW hire professional armed officers? No. They're keeping their Security unarmed and unprofessional (the officer killed was a retired auto-worker with apparently no background in Law Enforcement or Security.) But instead they hired ONE off duty police officer to be there in the daytime. Of course, this doesn't help matters at night. Nor can that one officer be everywhere at once. But that's the mindset of many of these administrators. They are so scared of guns, and those who carry them legallly and professionaly, that they willingly bare their throats to the wolves to avoid admitting that sometimes they need sheepdogs that can ACT.

Will there be another Va Tech? Yep. Let's just hope it ends like the Southern Law School shooting and not like Columbine next time.

There is a guy....and I have posted this before on the old site....Col Grossman from Killology.com

see: http://www.killology.com/school_safety_notes.htm

Col. Grossman stated that it is not a matter if...but rather WHEN that a terrorist(s) will go after a school.  He feels that schools and police need to make plans to reduce the number of casualties.  I will post some of these reasons in an LE ONLY thread for you to ponder.

He puts on a great program for both Law Enforcers and School officials. I highly recommend him.  As everyone has been saying...how do you convince people of the threat?  You must bring in the right presenters...they must be credible and knowledgeable.  This guy is definately POINT BLANK!

Another fellow that I know...ex Oregon State Trooper Bob Dent also has a program for schools on how to communicate non-verbally with LEO's. This is for school officials and police in crisis situations. These special hand signals are extremely easy to learn and use.
