Yes. One of the best tactics in war is to cut your enemies supply lines. Without adequate supplies, you can not fight effectively. That is especially true in modern warfare where, without oil, our planes, tanks, humvees, helicopters, and other vehicles become expensive paperweights. Of course, not all wars are shooting wars; there is also economic warfare. When countries which our hostile to us are in a position to hold us hostage to oil...well, for national security we need to have our own oil.
I think the government should open up offshore drilling, as well as drilling in Anwar. Even though I'm something of an environmentalist the bottom line is we need oil. In addition, there should be more work done on finding alternative energy sources.

I think a secure supply line for any resource we need is a matter of national security. I may not be remembering correctly, but I thought we should have learned that lesson with chromium during World War II. Most of the chromium comes from some very small areas of the world.
As for oil right now, I think we need to take a three prong approach. First, we really do need to develop alternative energy sources where they are feasible (nuclear and hydro for our electricity for example). Second we need to develop our internal supplies by expanding where we drill. And third, we need to import all we can now.
Seriously, the last is critical to long term energy plans and security. It is much better to use the foreign oil now while it is available than to use our internal stores up and need to import later. If we have the internal sources readily available (drilled and just waiting for the tap to be turned on), we can be secure with omported oil. We use theirs until they run out or shut it off, then use ours. We would no longer be dependent on them, and long term, they become dependent on us.
What will Saudi Arabia have for an economic base after we use all of their oil?
