July 2007 Editorial—Brothers in Arms

How do you really feel about firefighters? Do you respect their service and appreciate their courage? Do you have any stories of firefighter vs. police rivalries?

I have always respected firefighters and seen them as brothers in service. They have a generally dangerous job that requires as much bravery and dedication as police officers, if it is a little different.

I remember talking with a couple firefighters who could not understand how a cop can feel comfortable walking into a scene for a robbery or shooting in progress and not knowing if the bad guy was still there waiting for them. I explained that it is training and what you fear, because I don't think I could walk into a building that is already nearly fully engulfed to look for any victims and try to save them. Each of us has different fears and different things we can overcome or that stop us in our tracks.

Most of the rivalries I have seen between the two services have been on ball fields, and generally used as fund raisers for charitable purposes. I have seen a few disputes when the two are in contract negotiations and both trying for the larger slices of the same small pie. These usually blow over after the contracts are worked out, though.

And I know a lot of older officers who have said that if they had it to do all over again, they would be firefighters. No one hates them for doing their job. We really need to work on our public relations sometimes.

I haven't had problems with firefighters, but I have seen other officers have issues. I think it has more so to do with ego clashes, and not because of the fact one is a firefighter and one is a police officer.

I do really appreciate their service to the community and to their country. They are an important part of the total equation of public service. They have a dangerous job like we do. The only difference is that their "enemy" is fire which can also kill like Law Enforcement has a human enemy that can kill. We both have the same goal to protect and save lives...it's just we do it in a different way.

It would be highly disrespectful and wrong of any police professional to belittle firefighters and vice versa. Hey...if something major goes down...we are all in this together. It doesn't matter what agency your from. When duty calls, the threat is real, and people count on us to help them through the "storm".

"Great is he who lays down his life for a friend. Even greater is he who lays his life down for a complete stranger".

That about sums it up for those in the business to rescue, protect, and save lives and property of this nation.

I've always considered Fire/Rescue personnel as relatives although with a different mission. I'd sure hate to think about living in a country or area without them. I've had the same type of discussion with firefighters over the years as Steve Rothstein alluded to having in his post (almost word for word in fact, how wierd is that?). Ofc RachelT is right on the money with her post too.

We both run to the sound of the guns, although with different missions.
