February 2008 - The Winning Edge - Use Your Foot

Have you ever considered a kick as a useful tactical tool? I generally have used them for defense when I am on the ground, but not in a fight. I have practiced and used the thrust kick to open some doors also.

One kick I did not see mentioned, and I do not know if it was due to a lack of effectiveness or not, is a stomp on the instep of someone's foot. Lift the leg and thrust downward with the heel right onto the top of the instep. This is very effective when you have been forced into a grappling situation and are being held close to your opponent. DANGER: IT IS EASY TO PERMANENTLY INJURE WITH THIS KICK SO USE IT AS A LAST RESORT. And that might be why the magazine did not suggest this one, now that I think about it.

Yep...

I was taught that kicking is an effective means of getting compliance from a violent individual. That means a kick to the common peroneal (side of the thigh). There's nerves there that help aid an officer in a fight. Don't mind kicking if it comes to that.

ouch. You know, kicking a suspect could be quite painful. You could aim to kick, miss, and accidentally kick the pavement. That would hurt. Some of the criminals know how to dodge the kicks of a crazy cop. Is it an assault if the criminal gets out of your way and you kick the ground instead?

UMMM. STEVE, USING ONE'S FOOT IS A GREAT TACTICAL TOOL SO LONG AS YOU KEEP IT OUT OF YOUR MOUTH! LOL AND YOU DON'T LEAVE ANY LATENT FOOT PRINTS ON THE DOOR!
