December 2007 Winning Edge - Keep It Real
I am not sure I agree with all of the statements the author made about training in law enforcement. I do agree that we need to practice more realistic training, and practice how we actually will do it on the street. For example, I don not see a problem with using the red man suits and calling it realistic training IF the strikes and movements are how they would be on the street. Even more strongly, I would like to see more training done where we integrate several different areas. Training should include everything from the tactics of the stop and approach, to the physical control of the suspect who resists, to the shooting and control of the suspect after he was shot. The same scenario would work differently each time. Sometimes the suspect might win part, sometimes he might comply, sometimes his attacks will differ. We obviously need to start with training in each individual area, and then move towards how to integrate them in one scenario. The good news is that I am seeing more departments start moving slowly towards the integrated realistic training concept. I see more firearms training that includes movement and commands instead of just target shooting. I see more combination of tactics and simunition/paintball training. We are improving, I just think we can do better.
