April 2007 Editorial

Two unarmed NYPD auxiliaries helped stop a gunman and paid for it with their lives. Would you challenge a gunman if you had no weapon? Should auxiliary officers wear uniforms that make them look like real cops on duty, even though they have no weapons? Should auxiliary cops be armed?

Changing world of law enforcement...

I am still trying to understand why NYPD doesn’t allow their auxiliary police officers to carry weapons. If you put a uniform on a person that represents a law enforcement agency, one is then placing a target on these people. Remember, we have gangs that call them selves “Cop Killers”. We are a hunted breed. So now you have volunteers with targets on them with no way to defend them selves. Ask any officer to go patrol with out a duty belt with weapons. They will probably look at you like you’re crazy because you are. It’s suicide especially patrolling in a city with crime like New York without weaponry. New York has done well to curb its violence, but still…I really do not think it’s very logical to place uniformed personnel of any kind out on city streets without a weapon. It’s kind of like driving a car on a freeway section known to have deadly accidents without a seatbelt.

I would have followed the gunman reporting his location. That I agree with. I would not walk up and challenge a gunman without a weapon. I can kill with my hands, but a gun will kill much faster. I would be waiting until the subject has to re-load before rushing him. I have to say the two auxiliary officers had some balls now to go after the gunman. I can certainly understand why they did it, but I think this is a good learning lesson at a very costly expense. Arm all police officers of any kind. The world of law enforcement has changed requiring such a policy.
