William “Bill” Harvey has been the chief of the Lebanon City (Pa.) Police Department since 2002. He retired from the Savannah (Ga.) Police Department where he worked assignments in training, patrol, and CID. Harvey has more than 20 years of experience working with recruits, rookies, and FTOs.

I recently received a question from a department's Field Training Officer program coordinator. His department just hired several new officers. Great, except these are not academy-fresh officers; these are veteran officers from other departments. What now?

You might not like it, but it is a part of life.

Names do not make you a cop. If you mature and conduct yourself as a seasoned officer, the title "rookie" will eventually disappear from around you.
