A former Colorado Springs (Colo.) Police chief will serve as the interim Sanford (Fla.) Police chief to provide an outsider perspective on the Trayvon Martin shooting, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

Richard W. Myers brings three decades of law enforcement experience to a job he starts on Friday. In March, Sanford PD's Chief Bill Lee offered his resignation, saying he had become a distraction in the investigation. Chief Lee has been placed on administrative leave.

City officials said Myers would evaluate day-to-day police operations and "hold everything together until we decide what to do," said City Commissioner Mark McCarty.
