Two Belmont, N.C., residents were killed Wednesday night when their vehicle was struck during a police pursuit by a South Carolina driver.

Kevin Loftin, 56, and a friend, Donna Jean Deitz, 60, were killed when their Audi was struck by an Acura SUV driven by Lester Saunders Norman Jr. of Lancaster, S.C. Loftin was a former Belmont mayor.

Norman, 41, had failed to stop at a DWI checkpoint at 10 p.m., nearly striking two officers. A pursuit on Belmont streets reached speeds of 75 mph. Norman ran a red light, striking the Audi and sending the car into a utility pole, reports the Charlotte Observer.

I know of a couple of agencies that deploy spike strips in front of all vehicles until the DUI inspectioned driver is cleared to proceed or they have the driver outside the vehicle. That way any vehicle who tries to run won't get too far.
