Friendly fire from a retired Nassau County Police lieutenant likely killed the federal agent who intervened during a robbery at a Long Island pharmacy.

Special Agent John Capano, 51, an off-duty agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, was picking up cancer medicine for his elderly father when he confronted James McGoey in Charlie's Family Pharmacy in Seaford on Saturday.

As Capano and McGoey struggled in front of the pharmacy, retired Nassau County police Lt. Chris Garaghty, 54, and off-duty NYPD cop Joe Abria, 29, joined the confrontation, reports the New York Daily News. Investigators believe Garaghty accidentally shot the veteran ATF agent during the struggle.
