A Rapid City (S.D.) Police officer was killed and two others were wounded exchanging fire with four men they approached at a city intersection late Tuesday afternoon.

One of the three officers initially approached the four men at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Anamosa and Greenbriar streets. After a few minutes, the contact drew the attention of the other two officers. One of the men then pulled a concealed pistol and fired multiple rounds at the officers. At least one officer returned fire.

The three officers and suspect were transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Shortly after arrival, Officer James Ryan McCandless, 28, was pronounced dead.

McCandless was a six-year veteran of the Rapid City PD. The officer was recently engaged to be married, had purchased a new home, and had obtained a master's in public administration.

Officer Nick Armstrong, 27, was critically wounded, had surgery, and remains in critical condition. Officer Tim Doyle, 39, was shot in the side of the face and is listed in stable condition.

Police identified the suspect as Daniel Tiger, 22, of Rapid City. Tiger succumbed to his wounds Wednesday afternoon.

The last Rapid City PD officer to die in the line of duty was Les Hollers, who was killed by a drunk driver in 1985.
