Alabama's Tough Immigration Law Faces Legal Challenges

Civil rights groups vowed to defeat Alabama's new immigration enforcement law a day after Gov. Robert Bentley signed what supporters and critics agree is the toughest of its kind in the country.

Civil rights groups vowed to defeat Alabama's new immigration enforcement law a day after Gov. Robert Bentley signed what supporters and critics agree is the toughest of its kind in the country.

The law, which takes effect Sept. 1, empowers police to arrest people suspected of being an illegal immigrant if they are stopped for another reason and requires businesses and schools to verify whether workers and students are in the country lawfully. It also makes it a crime to knowingly transport or shelter illegal immigrants.

The ACLU and Southern Poverty Law Center have said they will challenge the law in court. Similar laws have been passed and blocked by federal judges in Utah and Arizona.
