Keokuk County (Iowa) Sheriff's deputy Eric Stein was shot and killed on Monday at a home that he had responded to a day earlier on an unknown disturbance call, reports the Des Moines Register.

Stein, Sheriff Jeff Shipley and Deputy Casey Hinnah approached the Sigourney home of Jeffrey Alan Krier, 53, on Monday, when shots rang out. Stein was killed, while the other two men were unhurt.

After a three-hour standoff, Krier exited the home armed with weapons. He was shot by a tactical unit with the Iowa State Patrol. Deputy Stein's death marks the first Iowa law enforcement officer lost in the line of duty since 1985.

The newspaper uncovered Krier's extensive criminal past that included a 1990 assault on a police officer.
