NYPD Officer-Involved Shootings Fewest Since 1971

NYPD cops last year fired their weapons in the fewest number of incidents since formal recordkeeping began in 1971, the department announced Monday.

The disclosure of the annual firearms-discharge report for 2008 marked an about-face for the NYPD, which had not disclosed the data in recent years.

The report was released as the New York Civil Liberties Union announced it was suing the NYPD in state court over its refusal to disclose detailed investigative reports of police-involved shootings.

Christopher Dunn of the NYCLU argued the public has a right to know the "full picture" surrounding police shootings, particularly the ethnicity of victims.
